Sharmila Samant
Sharmila Samant (b. 1967) received a BFA in 1989 from Sir J.J. School of Fine Arts in Mumbai, followed by an IDD (Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration) in 1990 from LS Raheja College of Architecture, also in Mumbai. Long active in the Mumbai art scene, she is a founding member of the Open Circle artists initiative. Abroad, she has been selected for important international artists residencies such as Gasworks in London (2001) and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (1998-00). Selected exhibitions include Present Future at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai (2005); Mirror Worlds: Contemporary Video from Asia at the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney (2005); and Rites/ Rights/ Rewrites at the JHF Centre for Interdisciplinary and International Studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA. Sharmila Samant lives and works in Mumbai.
